A jewellery student from Cambridge has created a range of intricate necklaces – made entirely from human hair.
Kerry Howley, 23, came up with the idea to design a range of necklaces from hair while studying patterns on wallpaper.
She cut several locks of brown hair from her friend’s mother before using a broken saw blade to sew it into intricate patterns.
Kerry, a BA jewellery student at Middlesex University, said she wanted to study the balance between ”aversion and attraction”.
She said: ”The necklaces are made of human hair, a material we are familiar with and take pride in. However, once off of the body it becomes an innate source of aversion.
”I wanted to see if I could make discarded hair attractive again. I hoped to create a delicate balance between feelings of aversion and attraction.”
Kerry, from Cherry Hinton, has already picked up this year’s Museum of Domestic Design and Architecture’s Arthur Silver Award for her necklaces.
Her work will be exhibited at the Business Design Centre in Angel, London, from June 29 until July 2.
